Classes meet Thursday from 6:00pm to 8:30pm down in Swearingen 2A07. The classes are live-streamed over the internet. Recordings will be available for download after each class. Please see Blackboard for how to view the class and participate.

We will meet every Thursday from January 13 through April 21, except for March 10.

Course work:

1. Weekly comment papers.
2. A take-home mid-term exam, due March 3.
3. A take-home final exam, due April 28.

Topics include:

• Health care as a sector of the economy
• Medicaid
• Medicare
• Employer-Sponsored Health Insurance

As the course progresses, I'll modify the Assignments with the week's slides and other readings. That way, when you want to prepare for the exams, you can find everything in Blackboard on the Assignments page.

We will spend a portion of most sessions macroeconomics, with such topics as:

• How a money economy can break down
• Banking basics
• Banking regulation
• Government spending, deficits, and the economy

The goal is to acquaint you with:

• Sources of funds for public health services in South Carolina
• Sources of funds for non-profit hospitals, especially payor mix
• Sources of funds for long-term care
• Finance principles, particularly present value and the internal rate of return
• Basic macroeconomics, particularly depression economics
